On top of that, you are able to take part in alchemic crafting where the outcomes help dictate parts of the story. Simply put, this magical and fantastical tale will keep you hooked all throughout. My Aunt is a Witch is probably a puzzle adventure visual novel game that many fans of the genre have glossed over. This indie game, developed by Graven Visual Novels, might look way too cartoony on the surface, however, it ends up providing a deep and nuanced adventure about witches, warlocks, and other magical beings.
You play as a young boy who must head out to stay with his aunt, who, as the title implies, happens to be a powerful witch. Unfortunately, his aunt isn't all that she is cracked up to be. While she is powerful, she is also somewhat of an outcast. Together, the two, and her cat, must explore various lands while solving puzzles and figuring out why darkness hangs over the kingdom.
Ace Attorney is often compared to Danganronpa, though it is far less dark. Like Danganronpa, it is up to the player to collect evidence and deal out their arguments in a courtroom. While the story is quite different, the mechanics and gameplay are quite alike. The story follows an attorney and his sidekick as they solve different cases. The characters are quite goofy and memorable. Exile Election is very much like Danganronpa as well as the Zero Escape series. The story takes place in an abandoned amusement park, where 12 characters are forced to play a killing game.
It is a fantastic title on its own and is especially sought out by Danganronpa fans. Unfortunately, it is not released worldwide.
It is only localized in Asia, for now. For fans who loved the darker side of Danganronpa, the Corpse Party games are another Japanese horror game of choice. The games follow high school students that get spirited away to a haunted elementary school. Like Danganronpa, this series was popular enough to get its own anime adaptation. It also is a visual novel game, but with puzzles and choices blended in. A major part of the Danganronpa series focuses on the main cast being trapped with no way out.
The Zero Escape series does the same thing, but with characters of far different ages and backgrounds. The visual novel series has three games and its gameplay is puzzle-focused.

Each chapter is divided into two parts: School Life, in which the player can explore the academy and progress through the story, and the Class Trial, in which the player must deduce the culprit of a murder. During School Life, the player can explore the school grounds in the first-person perspective.
In certain locations, the player moves a crosshair cursor to converse with other characters and interact with various objects. As the game progresses, more areas in the academy become available along with places that were sealed off in the previous chapter s on accessible floors. In Daily Life, the players converse with other characters and progress through the story. In the Class Trial, the students must discuss among themselves who the killer is. The most common of these is the Nonstop Debate, in which characters will discuss their thoughts on the case.
Bullet Time Battle is a one-on-one debate against another student featuring rhythm-style gameplay. As the opponent makes remarks, the player must press buttons in time to the beat to lock onto the remarks and shoot them down. To close out the case, Closing Argument is a puzzle in which the player pieces together a comic strip depicting how the murder went down. Roleplay featuring a cheap cruise with gambling, near-death experiences and unusually deep KFC philosophy!
Mock Trial. Shortly after, they are told that this all is a part of experiment, and in order to succeed, someone of them has to murder one person, and not get caught by the others. If no murders happen in 4 days, everyone gets executed. What would the students do?
